GREEN MOSQUE

Since the Ottoman tradition the mosques incorporate many different functions besides being only a
place for prayer. The project team thus decided to design not only a mosque but a religious complex
for various social activities and mutual aid.
The mosque complex, composed of the main mosque building, a library, education and lecture halls,
accompanied with a "soup kitchen", strengthens the idea of getting together and socializing as a
community, with social and cultural activities. Similarly the structure of the dome represents the
gathering function of the mosque with its structural units coming together to compose the dome shape.
The complex not only acts as a continuous interaction space but also respects its user’s privacy. The
ablution space and the prayer area are separated from the rest of the complex by different levels of
entrance. The level difference also enables the gradual transition from public to semi-public and finally
to private spaces of the complex.
The double-hull system in the mosque creates a thermal buffer zone between the main mass and
outside. This system which also helps to keep the calm environment in the prayer area, facilitates
internal heating in winter and also protects the interior zone from rain, snow and wind. In summer the
thermal buffer zone creates a cooler zone for the main mass. Additionally the vertical glass surfaces
create a spiritual atmosphere for the prayer area.
As the mosque is situated in a humid continental climate it is appropriate to benefit from the rain water
and solar properties of the area for a more sustainable usage. Solar thermal cells disposed on the
units composing the dome of the mosque, serve as an additional medium for water heating. Green
roofs of the library, soup kitchen and lecture rooms contribute to the insulation of the building, and to
the improved air quality, helping to lower urban air temperatures and combat the heat island effect.
A mosque necessitates more water than any other religious building because of the ablution ritual
before the prayer. In order to reduce the water consumption the project embodies several energyefficient
strategies. The rain water and waste water from ablution is collected so that the purified water
can be re-used for watering the vegetable garden with a high-efficiency drip irrigation system. For the
vegetable garden which aims to support the community, corn, onions and potatoes were selected
since they are easy to cultivate in this climate and in this geography and also they require less water to
grow. The products from the garden can be used to prepare meals for those who are in need, in the
community and can be dispatched in the “soup kitchen” which is integrated to the mosque complex.
Another feature that the mosque incorporates to reduce water consumption is low-flow toilets. Again
waterless urinals, low-flow faucets and water-efficient plumbing fixtures all contribute to water savings.
The water collected from the rain water and ablution water is also used for the toilet flushes.
As for the materials chosen for construction, the project team suggests using materials with recycled
content. According to the Wisconsin DNR "approximately 28% of waste, entering the municipal solid
waste stream is construction and demolition waste much of which is recyclable or reusable”[i].
Together with the reused materials, the project team considers the importance of using paints,
adhesives, and sealants that feature low chemical emissions for the sake of the environment. The use
of local materials for the construction and the interior design minimizes the energy spent for
transportation thus contributes to the sustainability goal of the project while also favoring the
development of the local industry.

Project Description;

The main concept of the design is to create an in-between condition between a built environment and the landscape. The inner and outer spaces flow into each other in an historical site while creating open, semi open and transparent surfaces. The spaces are accesible from different levels by ramps and stairs with a visual relation around the surrounding. The main pedestrian circulation axes in the site and the pathways with the landscape shapes the form of the building and the hierarchy of spaces. In addition; instead of creating new axes in the campus, existing main circulation areas are enriched by the green and resting areas by shaping the topography. Here architecture doesn’t interfere to the green area in the site. On the contrary, it composes the green area with the stairs and the open spaces. As in the general planning decisions in the Campus, the spaces for general use like conference halls are located to the corner of the site which faces the main square. While the spaces like lecture rooms, workshops, rooms for student communities are located to the green area at the site.

'Gazipaşa Belediyesi Cebeli Tepesi'nde Simgesel Yapı Mimari Proje Yarışması ' - İkincilik Ödülü

Cebeli Tepesi’nin kentteki konumu ve bölgenin ekolojik çeşitliliği , tasarım alanında yapılan bütüncül kurguya yön vermekte; aynı zamanda bu kurgu kentli belleğini ve bilicini arttırmayı sağlamaktadır. Bu yüzden ana yaya yolu olan kanyon, odak noktalarda seyir teraslarını şekillendirmekte ve kentin en etkileyici noktasında tasarımı vurgulamak için kentli ile karşı karşıya gelmektedir.

Kentli organik bir şekilde tasarım alanına entegre olan kanyonda yukarı doğru yükselirken her dönüşte yakalayacağı farklı açılarla görsel algılarında kenti fotoğraflama şansına sahip olurlar.

Tasarımın merkezinde yer alan ve manzaraya açılan kafeterya binası net ve yalın bir ifadeye sahiptir. Bununla birlikte düşey organizasyon olarak tasarlanan seyir kulesi, kentsel simge ve temsil niteliğine sahip olmanın dışında panoramik deniz manzarasına ve gün batımına tanıklık etmeye olanak sunan dikey bir platformdur.

Malzeme kullanımı projenin önemli odak noktasından biridir. Kanyon boyunca farklı kotlarda yükselen duvarlarda bitki örtüsünü tutan, yer yer saran yeşil bir yüzey örüntüsü kurgulanmıştır. Bu organik duvarlar kanyonun ana karakteristiğini oluşturmakla birlikte doğal yaşamın önemi hakkında kentliye farkındalık sunmaktadır. Bitki örtüsünü ve toprağı serbest bırakarak yerden yükseltilen seyir terasları, yatay platformlarda ahşap kullanılmasına ve taşıyıcı sistemde de çelik elemanların kullanılmasına yön verir. Bu sayede de bitki örtüsüne minimum müdahale edilmiş olunur.

Sergi, uygulanmış örneklerin paylaşımının yanısıra, hem teorik hem de pratik düzlemlerde oluşan farkındalığı Hollanda bağlamında belgelemeyi de hedefliyor. Sergide değişken durumlara yanıt verebilmek adına geliştirilen teknoloji kullanımı, tasarım süreçlerinin belgelenmesi ve uygulamalar üzerinden aktarılıyor. Bu kapsamda, “24H: NeoArchitecture” ve “Mirck Architecture”, yüksek kaliteli evrimsel Hollanda Mimarlığına ışık tutan önemli bir başlangıç teşkil ediyor.

24H> ARCHITECTURE

01.01.01 tarihinde Boris Zeisser ve Maartje Lammers tarafından Rotterdam’da kurulan 24H> ARCHITECTURE, hem ekoloji sanatına hem de Art Deco akımına gönderme yapması dolayısıyla, “Art d’eco” temasında özetlenebilen, doğadan esinlenmiş tasarımlar üzerine yoğunlaşıyor.

Amaçları tüm işlerin saklı katmanlarını keşfedebilmek olan ofis, program ve arsanın yanısıra bu gizli katmanların herbir tasarım için bir esinlenme kaynağı oluşturduğunu dile getiriyor. Ekip, tasarım sürecini yönlendiren farklı temalarla çalışarak, geniş bir yelpazede mimari olmayan çözümler üretiyor.

Evrim: tek bir mekanda çoklu program kullanımına olanak veren, zaman içinde uyarlanabilen yapılar

Doğalaşım: Doğanın yapı malzemelerine yansıyan soyut yorumlamaları

Organizma: Büyüyen eklentilerle, varolan yapıların yeni kompozisyonlara dönüştürülmesi

Art d’eco: Çevreyi korumak ve desteklemenin yanısıra ekoloji sanatını oluşturan güzellik

Duyarlılık: Duyuları harekete geçirmek için bir yapının, varolduğu süre boyunca, malzemenin doğal bir beceri ile kullanımı sayesinde güzel yaşlanması

Mirck Architecture

Mirck Architecture (Amsterdam, 2003) derin mekân tasarımı üzerine uzmanlaşan bir mimari ofis. Mimari ve mühendisliği birbiriyle dengeleyen ofiste gerçekleştirilen özverili işbirlikleri tasarım ve inşa süreçlerini benzersiz bir yapıyla sonlandırıyor. Mirck Architecture tasarımları, yeni buluşlar, eko-mantık, gün ışığından yararlanma, yapısal aletler, değerlilik ve akıllı varoşlar gibi temalardan besleniyor. Süreç içindeki tüm katılımcıların özellikleri ve işe özel durumlar, bu temaların içeriğini belirliyor. Şu anda çalışanların yarısı yeni buluşla ve yenileme çalışmaları ile ilgilenmekte.

Ofisin kurucusu Sander Mirck aynı zamanda Hollanda ve İtalya’da değişik üniversitelerde konuk öğretim üyeliği, Hollanda Mimarları Kraliyet Enstitüsü’nde komite üyeliği ve Hollanda Mimarlık Enstitüsü Dostları kuruluşunda başkan yardımcılığı görevlerini üstleniyor.
